Open (Show) Pony/Galloway

Characteristics

Movement

Must be elegant (Ballerinas of the show horse world) demonstrating a pointed (or "flicky") toe in their movement. Their movement should appear light & effortless across the ground - "Pretty" movement is highly regarded, uphill movers with a greater moment of suspension & range of motion in front - compared to hunters which are more level & flat in their stride

Conformation

Hacks are FINE boned (think Thoroughbred & Riding pony type). They should be well proportioned with minimal conformational flaws all round. Generally have longer cannons (and legs) than a hunter with a refined ("pretty") head and neck - a large kind, glassy eye with a refined nose that is proportionate to the neck. Hacks should have a delicate yet striking appearance

Bone

Hacks 16 hh and over should carry LESS than 8 1/2 inches of bone measured just under the knee - For Small Hacks, Galloways & Ponies this should be significantly less, generally the finer the horse/pony the better for hacks

Impression/rideability

Must have PRESENCE/ "Look at me" factor.  Hacks should be undeniably beautiful both to look at & ride (or create the idea that they are). They should create the impression of a well educated, forward going mount that is light in the hand/frame - ideal for a leisurely ride. Whilst hacks are not required to gallop they maybe asked on occasion to demonstrate a rein back.

Manners

Exuberance/Anxiety is generally more forgiven in the Hack ring however naughtiness/meanness such as biting, kicking, bucking & bolting is not and will still be penalised

Colour

Hacks do not have to be of any certain colour, however white "flashy" markings can help the horse/pony stand out and create more presence - hence white markings on a hack are desireable for many. However they are not a necessity.

Scaring

Scaring is more likely to penalised in the hack ring as it can take away from the overall quality of the animal however many judges are inclined to overlook it on a truely quality hack - Scaring can put horses at a disadvantage competing against otherwise equal unblemished competitors
